City of Punta Gorda, Florida

USWSC maintains a relationship with the City in which we provide a range of services designed to augment and support City personnel. This arrangement is utilized to increase operational flexibility and reliability of the delivery of high quality service to the customer. The Water Treatment division of the City of Punta Gorda operates and maintains the Shell Creek Water Treatment Facility, which treats and supplies potable water to Punta Gorda Utility Water Customers. The plant is currently rated at 8,000,000 gallons per day. U.S. Water Services Corporation (USWSC) personnel work closely with the City of Punta Gorda Utilities Division to provide operations and operational support for the ever increasing requirements relating to water management, water quality and treatment standards required and regulated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and other regulatory agencies. The plant is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and USWSC provides relief operating services to assist the City with plant operations.

The treatment plant uses a conventional surface water, color removal process consisting of (1) screening and pumping, (2) aeration, (3) coagulation, (4) residual solids handling, (5) enhanced sedimentation, (6) dual media filtration, and (7) disinfection, followed by stabilization chemicals. These include aluminum sulfate for coagulation, acid for pH control, powdered activated carbon for taste and odor, polymers to aid in sedimentation, chlorine plus ammonia to form chloramines for disinfection and Total Tri-Halo-Methane (TTHM) and Halo Acetic-Acid (HAA) control, caustic soda for pH control and a corrosion control stabilizer within the distribution system. Dosages and chemicals vary with the seasonal fluctuations of the Shell Creek source water.
