Job Description

Position Summary:

Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of water and wastewater systems, including the installation, maintenance, rehabilitation and repair of valves, meters, pumps, blowers and associated equipment. Also assists with the proper maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection equipment and infrastructure

Essential functions:

Lifting items of 75 pounds; walking on uneven surfaces; use of power and hand tools; constant bending; frequent climbing; hear oral instructions; speak to other workers; work in confined spaces.

Typical duties and responsibilities:

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Read water meters for billing. As needed
  • Work in and around raw sewage/wastewater.
  • Work in and around underground utilities.
  • Manual digging and excavating
  • Respond to water and sewer calls on weekends and after hours and determine course of action.
  • Clear minor sewer blockages and call in help for larger problems.
  • Assist other maintenance employees in performing repairs/maintenance of , water/wastewater pipelines and other assets at the water and wastewater facilities.
  • Clean and maintain equipment used in the course of work.
  • Troubleshoot water and wastewater pumps, blowers and other equipment at the treatment plants
  • Makes repairs to water or wastewater lines to include laying and caulking pipe, cutting pipe, tapping mains and service lines, installing and setting meters, and flushing and evacuating clogged wastewater lines.
  • Performs semiskilled and skilled installation, maintenance, and repair of valves, meters, gauges, pumps, and associated equipment used in water or wastewater collection systems.
  • Performs semiskilled and skilled inspections and troubleshoot control panels
  • Locates and marks location of water and/or wastewater lines to prevent damage during construction and digging operations.
  • Assists in excavating work site as required facilitating installation, maintenance, or repair of water, reclaimed water or wastewater lines and restoring site to original condition when work is complete.
  • Performs grounds keeping and custodial work as required.
  • May provide instruction and guidance to lower level employees as required.
  • Basic electrical knowledge

  • Shovel, rake, jackhammer, vibratory compactor, vibratory plate, trucks, power tools, chain saw, sander, weed eater, paint machine, hammer, wrench, pry-bar, pipe cutter, chain cutter, cement chain saw, sewer rodder truck, man lift use up to 44 feet high, tapping machine, street sweeper, welder and torch. petroleum products not limited to gasoline, diesel and motor oils, liquid propane, cement products, earth material including dusts from them, latex paint, water, brass parts, cast iron pipe, aluminum parts, galvanized parts, PVC pipe products, ABS pipe products, glues and primers, old lead pipe joints, non-friable asbestos cement pipe, epoxy glues and various cleaners and disinfectants.


Possess a valid driver's license.


Knowledge of:

  • Use of equipment used in the utilities field
  • Working knowledge of water distribution or wastewater collection systems and associated equipment.
  • Working knowledge of most equipment and tools used to maintain water or wastewater collection systems and associated equipment.
  • Skill in the use of most equipment and tools used to maintain water or wastewater collection systems and associated equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside in a subtropical climate, adverse weather conditions, and high noise levels.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.

  • High School Graduate or GED, and experience Related to water and wastewater fields


Work in and around raw sewage and wastewater, chlorine fumes, raw sewage waste fumes and sewer gases. Constant exposure to sun, walking on uneven surfaces, bending, kneeling, squatting, twisting, exposure to airborne dust and loud noises; frequent climbing of ladders of up to 12′ above ground, driving, working on slippery surfaces, working with toxic substances; occasional lifting of items weighing up to 75 pounds, lifting above shoulders, climbing of ladders of up to 20′ above ground; ability to work in confined and cramped spaces; repetitive hand motion; hear verbal instructions; climb in/out of ditches; turn valves, lift and carry pipes; dig ditches; small motor skills, and climbing flights of stairs.
