General Statement of Responsibility:

This position assists in the operation, maintenance, inspection, repair, and installation of the wastewater collection system, wastewater treatment plant, and reclaimed water distribution system and their components. Work is done under the direction of the Maintenance Department Superintendent and may be performed as a member of a crew or independently.

Examples of Duties to be performed:

  • Performs work to support the utility's preventative maintenance program and repair activities for the wastewater treatment plant process components, equipment, valves, tanks, grounds, and facilities.

  • Cuts pipe, installs repair clamps, and does a variety of work related to the maintenance, repair, and extension of sewer mains, laterals, and force mains.

  • Raises manholes to grade.

  • Mixes and places concrete in the construction and repair of manholes and cleanout.

  • Inspects new sewer construction and makes repairs to existing sewers.

  • Operates power driven machinery such as jackhammers, tampers and concrete saws.

  • Makes sewer taps.

  • Assists in inspecting and cleaning pump stations for proper operation.

  • Assists other maintenance staff members in repair and maintenance of pumps, controls, generators and related equipment in pump stations.

  • Assists in safety and skillfully operating one or more of the following specialized equipment: vacuum truck, boom truck, combination sewer cleaner, rodder, cameras truck, wastewater and reclaimed water pump stations.

  • Performs tasks related to the sewer collection system preventive maintenance program such as cleaning sewer lines, inspecting for infiltration and inflow, etc.

  • Moves dirt, debris, or other material from one place to another.

  • Assists in performing utility locates.

  • Responds to emergency or abnormal facility situations outside of normal work shift.

  • Required to be "on-call" and carry a Company phone.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Knowledge of methods, materials, and techniques for sanitary sewer system repair, maintenance, and installation.

  • Knowledge and understanding of water and wastewater utility operation their and maintenance processes and procedures. Ability to work with and around water and wastewater treatment equipment, chemicals, and process components.

  • Read and interpret plans and engineering documents, Safety Data Sheets, and manufacturer's Operation and Maintenance Manuals.

  • Prepare clear, legible, and well organized written notes and records. Have the ability to use basic computer software such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and G-Mail.

  • Ability to safely and proficiently use heavy construction equipment such skid steer, backhoe, excavator, forklift, utility line truck, dump truck, and trailers.

  • Knowledge of construction safety.

  • Skill in the use of the tools and equipment used.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.

  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions and exposure to the elements.

  • Ability to work with raw sewage and chemicals using normal protective equipment.

  • Ability to work in small, cramped spaces and comply with confined space entry procedures.

  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects 100 lbs short distances 100 ft or less.

  • Ability to support 50 lbs. overhead.

  • Ability to climb ladders to enter or exit manholes.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with other maintenance staff members.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug test.

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid FL CDL with a good driving record.

  • Minimum of 5 years water and wastewater utility work experience with 2 years in a foreman/ supervisor role.

  • Must be able to pass the Department of Transportation physical exam and possess a Florida Commercial Drivers License.

  • Regular and timely attendance.

  • Good physical condition without physical limitation.
