This quarter, we’re proud to introduce Miguel Ocana, Maintenance Supervisor for U.S. Water at the Miami-Dade South Dade Landfill.
A Career Built on Curiosity and Technical Thinking
With 10 years of experience in the water and wastewater industry and more than three years with U.S. Water, Miguel Ocana has built a career grounded in technical expertise, adaptability, and a passion for problem-solving. Based at the South Dade Landfill in Miami-Dade County, Miguel describes his role as far more than the typical responsibilities of a Maintenance Supervisor. “My official title is Maintenance Supervisor, but my job description is essentially ‘wizard,’” he jokes. “If something needs to get done, I make it happen.”
While his primary responsibilities are supporting U.S. Water Industrial Group’s Maintenance Manager and providing operational support at the landfill, the reality of the role is that every day brings a new challenge. From troubleshooting unexpected equipment issues to helping operations run smoothly, he thrives in an environment where flexibility and quick thinking are essential.
Finding a Path into Water and Wastewater
Interestingly, a career in water and wastewater was not always part of Miguel’s plan. About a decade ago, a close friend introduced him to the industry as a stable and rewarding career path. At the time, he was working in labor and landscaping, and although the opportunity sounded appealing, the technical side of the field initially felt overwhelming. “I remember picking up the books for the first time and saying, ‘Man, this isn’t for me,’” he recalls. “But then something just clicked. Once it did, there was no looking back.”
He began his career as a trainee working on small water and wastewater package plants, where he quickly developed a strong foundation under the guidance of a mentor who left a lasting impression on him.
“He told me, ‘Good. Now throw everything you learned from the books away and let’s learn how to actually run a plant,’” Miguel says. “That hands-on experience shaped the way I approach the work to this day.”
Growing Through Experience
After spending several years operating plants, Miguel transitioned briefly into construction work focused on underground utilities, installing water and sewer lines. Even while working outside traditional operations, he remained connected to the industry. In March 2023, he joined U.S. Water as the Lead Operator at the South Dade Landfill and has since advanced into his current role as Maintenance Supervisor.
Looking ahead, Miguel is excited about helping expand U.S. Water’s Industrial Group services and footprint throughout the southeastern United States while continuing to grow professionally within the company.
Solving Problems Every Day
Today, one of the things Miguel enjoys most about his work is the opportunity to solve problems every day. “There’s something deeply satisfying about encountering a challenge, building out a solution, and then watching that solution actually work,” he explains. “Every issue is essentially a puzzle, and I genuinely enjoy figuring it out.”
That mindset has helped Miguel thrive in an industry where adaptability and innovation are essential. Whether supporting maintenance operations or tackling unexpected issues in the field, he approaches every challenge with creativity.

For Miguel, the answer comes down to opportunity and growth. “What I enjoy most about working for U.S. Water is the room they’ve given me to grow,” he says. “From the moment I came on, I’ve had the flexibility to step into new challenges and really grow into my role. It’s the kind of environment where your contributions are recognized and your potential isn’t capped.”
He adds that he’s proud of what he has accomplished so far and excited for the opportunities still ahead as he continues building his career with U.S. Water.
