Faces of U.S. Water: Frank DeOrio – A Lifetime of Expertise Strengthening U.S. Water’s Technical Excellence

Frank DeOrio

At U.S. Water, our success is built on the dedication and expertise of our team members. In our Faces of U.S. Water series, featured in our quarterly client newsletter, we spotlight the employees who work tirelessly to ensure clean, safe water and reliable water and wastewater systems for the client and communities we serve. This quarter, we’re proud to introduce Frank DeOrio, Sr. Technical Director and leader of U.S. Water Industrial Group’s Technical Support team.

From Summer Job to Lifelong Career in Water and Wastewater

Sometimes, a single opportunity can set the course for an entire career. For Frank DeOrio, that moment came during college, when a summer job at a wastewater treatment facility sparked an unexpected fascination with wastewater systems. That hands-on experience opened the door to what would become a lifelong commitment to the water and wastewater industry—a field that continues to challenge and inspire him more than four decades later.

After earning his undergraduate and graduate degrees, Frank began his career as a Senior Microbiologist at Bristol-Myers, where he honed his scientific and analytical skills. He then transitioned into public service as Municipal Utility Director, overseeing both water and wastewater treatment operations for a city in New York State. From there, he joined O’Brien & Gere (OBG) in the Operations Group, further expanding his technical expertise and leadership experience. When OBG was acquired by Ramboll, and Ramboll’s Operations Group later joined U.S. Water, Frank officially became part of the U.S. Water team—bringing with him over 45 years of industry experience and a wealth of institutional knowledge.

Guiding Technical Teams and Strengthening Operations

In his current role as Senior Technical Director, Frank provides guidance and support to both the Technical Support Group and field operators across U.S. Water. His deep experience enables him to help troubleshoot complex operational challenges, mentor emerging professionals, and ensure that technical decisions are rooted in both science and practical experience.

“Challenges arise daily, and that’s fun,” Frank says. “Because of my experience now, I’ve probably seen that problem before—and know the solution.”

Why U.S. Water?

When asked what he enjoys most about working for U.S. Water, Frank points to the nature of the work itself. “Our projects are often faced with plenty of challenges,” he explains, “and overcoming those challenges is what makes the job rewarding.”

That problem-solving spirit, paired with a lifetime of dedication to water quality and operational excellence, makes Frank an invaluable resource to both his colleagues and clients.
